HI! I’M ALLEN.
I’ve been an artist and designer for print and digital for going on 20 years now.
I started out doing logos and book design for a game company in Atlanta in the ’90s, then moved to Los Angeles in 1997 and worked in entertainment design with a Burbank studio (Peter Green Design; clients included Fox Kids and Disney), doing magazine production, poster design, and producing digital assets while apprenticing with the master designers there. Since then I’ve worked in just about every kind of print design there is, branding and identity, publications, etc.
I’ve also been designing for and building web sites since 1996, with concentration on visual design for UX/UI, web applications, and responsive sites. Recent experience includes re-designing a comic publishing platform with 100,000 users, responsive launch sites for tech startups, and a stint as a Senior UI Designer at Symantec.
Aside from general graphic and web design, I have also created illustration work for various projects, including the IMAGINE role playing game, HALO-related artwork for Penny Arcade’s Child’s Play Charity events, and currently designing identity and world-building for Aethercast.
I've been an artist by whole life and a paid professional designer since 1996 or so, when I started doing illustrations and design work for a game company in Atlanta called Imagine. In 1997 I moved to Los Angeles and got to create a lot of graphics for entertainment-related projects, sharpening my digital production skills and gaining a design education from paying very close attention while working with world-class designers on real-world projects.
Into geeky things, art and illustration, design nerdery, typography, cartoons, etc. Grew up on Simonson's Thor, Layton's Iron Man, and Byrne & Claremont's X-Men.
After high school, I spent a lot of time in Athens, Georgia, getting into the music scene and the wonderful graphics and drawings that went into the band flyers and gig posters that wallpapered the town. My friends and I would actually scour the campus and downtown collecting the best ones. Sort of my first foray into researching graphic design. I also did my first cartoons and designs here, promoting parties and events, and a set of logos for Wuxtry Comics (which they did not use - ah well, it's valuable to get used to rejection in this line of work, too).
My work has moved through an interesting series of turns over the last fifteen years. I became a Photoshop specialist for Peter Green Design, then in Burbank, (lots of entertainment graphics, magazine production, DVD art, etc.), then a general print designer (typography, logo design, general business collateral, publications, etc.), then moved into interactive design (I had been doing Websites since the late '90s, but really fell into it as a UI/UX designer on Web apps and consumer software in recent years).
Currently I find I'm swinging back around to my first love of artwork, and concentrating on combining type and graphic design with illustrative visuals. This is showing up as design work for game companies and even concept art and character design. It's fascinating figuring out ways to apply my whole skillset to new forms and expressions.
Always a new horizon.
